When a designer comes up with excellent design that just pulls at his client’s heartstrings, Part One is done. This is when the rest of the parts come into play: Who can we trust to print this? What kind of paper stock? Is a press check really necessary? Do you, the client, have a brother-in-law in who-knows-where that is a printer? How picky should we be about the fit and finish of the final printed piece? And the bottom line ... how do these things effect the cost? Designers: always design within the parameters of the client. Clients: set your parameters and limits early. Do you really want a 4-color, die-cut, foil stamped brochure? Designer: be prepared to give sensible estimates on what these services will cost. See what has been done in the past, and of course, create one better. If you are a graphic artist, the quest is not to develop a portfolio piece for yourself, but to give your client an excellent vessel used to expand their business.
the perfect piece is more than just a great design
